Penelope is
a landscape artist but it is the presence of some our most endangered
species and other graceful creatures set in these wilderness scenes,
that have captivated her collectors.
Penelope,
who lives in Spain, working constantly in her remote studio, says
'wild' is not the word she would want to describe either the 'life'
or the places she paints. Perhaps 'peaceful', for each scene is
entirely calm or serene. There is often more than a hint of the
surreal. These illuminative works are executed in oil paint on
canvas & board with minimum paint, using stippling & glazing
techniques achieving a unique luminosity & depth. The charcoal
studies are more than drawings, as she 'paints' the medium &
uses dabbers and putty rubber to reduce tone, plus repeated layers
of charcoal.
She was born
in 1942 in Buckinghamshire, England, studied Zoology & Botany
before the Fine Art Course at Portsmouth College of Art where
she specialized in drawing & sculpture. She continued her
art studies in Rome & Florence.
From 1963
- 1971 she lived a nomadic life spending most of the time in Spain
& Turkey. In 1971 she settled in Ibiza, primarily for the
sake of the education of her two children and has lived there
ever since.
She achieved
some reputation as a miniaturist with exhibitions throughout Spain
& London. Started painting full size and full time in 1982,
with her first solo show in 1983 in Ibiza. Eight years later,
1990 she had her first show at the Portal Gallery, Bond Street,
London W1. Her work has been much collected especially through
Christie's Wildlife Art Sales, South Kensington, London &
she has participated in various exhibitions in London, Barcelona,
Chicago, Salamanca and Ibiza.
Now with a
studio in the Wychwood's, Oxfordshire, she hopes to divide her
time between her 2 studios and travelling to the wild places,
deserts, forests and jungles that inspire her works.
The latest
works are a series of large canvases of wild Spain, mostly without
wildlife.
